There are four basic types of bags good for a small laptop, and this information is applicable to a normal sized laptop too. These small laptop bags are excellent for protecting you from dust, water damage, shock and even theft.
A sleeve is not really a laptop bag, but more a sleeve which fits your laptop like a glove and keeps it safe from the elements. It will protect your laptop from dust and water exposure but provides little protection against shock or drops. Some sleeves come with a handle making carrying easier, and also come in a huge variety of colours and materials. Overall this is the best option if you are only carrying your laptop infrequently and normally leave it at home, or at the workplace.

A briefcase/carry case is a small laptop bag which is ideal for transporting your portable computer and provides easy transfer from bag to work spot. Its more reliable than a sleeve to protect your portable notebook computer but far less lighter. Overall this is probable the best option though its worth ensuring you don’t have too much space for the laptop to move.

A backpack or rucksack is for those travellers who spend a lot of time carting their laptop around. Its a little more susceptible to theft as its sitting behind your back, away from eye view. To counter this, ensure that your bag has a flap that covers the main opening.

A hard case is to protect your laptop from any type of shock or disturbance. Its ideal for those who cart their laptop in rough environments and with good coded security built in, will ensure no light fingered friends are going to help themselves to your prized possession.
