Review of Sony VAIO VGN-P588E Lifestyle UMPC

The product

The good news is that the Sony VAIO VGN-P588E Lifestyle PC is far easier to use than it is to say. While the VAIO range has been known for its design and style, this in many ways is just another small laptop that is perfect for people that can afford to pay for the brand name, as well as the features. While the design of the P5 is excellent, sleek, stylish and unique, it comes with a hefty price tag that comes in at a price over $1,000.

This Ultra Mobile Portable model comes with an 8 inch screen with resolution of 1,600 x 768, which is a different concept than we are used to. It is also unusual as it uses a new pointing stick instead of the normal touch pad in order to better utilize space. The keyboard is normal and reliable, but the smaller space does make it tough to type in a hurry.

An out of the normal aspect for the VAIO VGN-P588E is the fact that they switched to Windows Vista instead of Linux or Windows XP. Other systems would soar with the 2GB of Ram that this small laptop comes with, but Vista slows everything down. The benefit is that the visual appeal of vista fits in with the design of the small laptop itself.

Summary

It really is the extra add ones that make this netbook more impressive than its cheaper counterparts, including fast wireless, Bluetooth, mobile broadband, and GPS. The main issue with this laptop is the drain on the battery life as under heavy use it only lasts about 2 hours. If you changed operating systems you may end up getting more life out of your battery.

All in all, if you have the money to spend and care a lot about design and style, then the VAIO VGN-P588E Lifestyle PC could be the perfect fit for you. However, there are better options on the ultra portable mobile market that can save you money and provide you with just as much usability and efficiency.
