Design and Display

A smart and distinctive laptop in its price range with a crisp, silvery white and heavily textured finish that does not allow any room for fingerprint smudges.  A good size 15.4″ widescreen display allows for portability, working for extended hours at home or in the office, and for entertainment.  Sony’s X-black LED technology at 1200 x 800 resolution ensures realistic and natural looking pictures, while retaining the sharpness and brightness of images. Although the contract and colour settings are intense, the anti-reflective coating minimizes glare to allow easy viewing of multimedia files.

The tile-style keyboard is an excellent design innovation and the black matte surface allows a nice feel to the keys.  The touchpad on the Vaio NS is fairly large and has a smooth surface with well placed chrome buttons; but they are a bit noisy.  Altogether, the chassis build quality is faultless and the textured plastic is robust.  The widescreen is held in place by sturdy hinges that mesh with the design.

Sony has taken a leaf out of Dell Inspiron 1545 in adding some well thought out features that enhance the display. While technological advances emphasize on touch-sensitive media controls, Sony’s innovation holds the key to future models.  Two buttons placed above the keyboard provide an interesting alternative to the way you can access the Internet, multimedia installations, Skype and webcam.

Features

The Vaio NS ensures maximum connectivity with 4 USB ports which means that you do not have to use an external USB hub. The Integrated 1.3 megapixel camera is a great tool for instant chat with friends and family and for the movie and music buffs, there is the Vaio Movie Story and the Vaio Music Box to easily create multimedia content.

The connections for the Ethernet, Modem and Power inputs are found around the back of the chassis while the right hand side holds the DVD and the additional USB ports. The VGA, headphone, microphone and two USB ports sit nicely on the left side. The highlight feature is the hinged flap that is so useful to keep the dust out – a very handy solution that is definitely a must for future laptop, notebook and netbook designs.

Audio output is nothing to write home about; just mediocre with the speakers managing just about enough volume levels.  So, you will need headphones or external speakers as a must have option.

Performance

The Vaio NS30E performs well on all fronts with design and performance getting a high rating of 7 points out of 10.   For features and value, it garners a good rating of 6 which is more than average.

Conclusion

The Sony Vaio NS30E is a machine with great potential to be a class performer but since it fits into a particular budget slot, enhanced performance and usability are hindered.  In spite of this, it is a comfortable and sleek laptop if you need a handy piece that handles all your work.
